More of a content week than code week

Written by Brenda Zhang

Highlights:

  • This was a content adding and mindless data entry kind of week. Boring, but very necessary. There are now 400+ tools and 80+ affiliate programs on the site. Up from less than 150 and 50, respectively, just a week ago. There was a huge backlog of tools that were featured in past newsletter issues and never added to the website. And many of those tools had affiliate programs!

  • Created a More Tools Like This section for the tool pages. I associated all the tools with newsletter links so that readers can check out the newsletter issue the tool was featured in with similarly themed tools. Below that link, I also display 4 random tools from the directory with either the same main category or similar subcategories.

More stuff I did:

  • Edited and published over 10 blog posts written by my awesome writing team. I had quite a backlog to grind through. Luckily, most of these only need light editing and the addition of images, links, Insanely Cool Tips, CTAs components, and some SEO headings and phrasing tweaks.

  • Some much needed updates to past blog posts: grammar, heading tweaks, mid-post subscribe CTAs for the longer posts, fixing of broken links, and backlinking to tool pages instead of external pages more often.

  • Added the Other Directories page! There's a lot of directories and collections out there. Plenty of design inspiration, productivity tools, and knowledge to be found in the nooks and crannies of the internet.

  • Replaced a few of the categories in the Tool Directory with the categories that had a lot more tools and that more people care about.

Minor things you wouldn't care much about but I do:

  • Updated the style of images to have a softer border (in terms of curve and border color) to better match the rest of the site.

  • Updated the style of that little line below the title and author in blog posts. Instead of a text dashes, it's an actual stylized line now. Of course, it is purple. And it lines up perfectly with the website header background. Beautiful.

  • Removed unused dependencies that kept breaking the build and cleaned up the code a bit.
